A Port Chester father of three who was facing deportation will be allowed to stay in the U.S. for at least eight more months.
Noel Lopez-Reyes turned himself in to Immigration Customs Enforcement Thursday morning and met with immigration officials.  It is unclear what will happen when the eight months are up.
Lopez-Reyes fled to the U.S. in 1992 in an effort to escape the Guatemalan civil war. His request for asylum was not approved at the time, and previous requests to delay deportation were denied by ICE.
Lopez-Reyes' wife Doris Hernandez and kids were overjoyed to hear the news outside the Federal Immigration Building in lower Manhattan. Hernandez had said she was terrified about her husband being deported because their 4-year-old son Sean lives with spina bifida, scoliosis and debilitating abnormalities, and their young daughter also has disabilities.
Lopez-Reyes has to check in with ICE officials on June 25 of next year. His lawyers say they are pursuing two avenues of legal immigration relief for him.
Go HERE for an interview with Lopez-Reyes and his attorney.
