The pond at Merwin Meadows Park, a popular swimming spot in the Town of Wilton, will be closed for the entire 2025 season.

Town officials tell News 12 the area is still dealing with issues from last August’s storm, which led to massive amount of flooding in the area.

After the storm, officials say that the pond overflowed into much of the park, even mixing with the brook behind the playground. This caused mud and all sorts of other debris to be pulled into it, making it unsafe for swimming.

To fix it, the town still needs to dredge the pond, or dig out all the debris, then backfill the bottom of the pond with sand. The pond drains into the Norwalk River, so all remedies must be approved by different state and local agencies.

"I'm very disappointed, because my daughter was looking forward to it," said Jane Allimant, who lives in town. "I was actually wondering when they were going to open up. We were looking toward that."

"It's also a lot of the jobs here," added Lia Lombardi. "One of my friends doesn't have a job this summer because she was a lifeguard, and she can't lifeguard here."

The Department of Parks and Recreation says the work on the pond should start in the fall, and they expect everything to be back up and running for next year. The Town of Wilton is offering refunds for anybody who purchased their park pass before the news was announced.

The Wilton YMCA also says it will offer Wilton residents limited outdoor passes, which have access to its pond, beach and splash pad.
