It is a mayoral election year in Yonkers and there is already fireworks concerning a flier sent out by current Mayor Phil Amicone.
The flier touts the hiring of 30 new police officers. The mayor?s spokesperson claims it was sent to all households in the city to show progress is being made in fighting crime. However, Yonkers City Council member Dennis Robertson, a Democratic candidate for mayor, is questioning the mailer. Robertson says it was unethical, or even illegal, because taxpayer money was used to produce it. Robertson points out one of the pictures on the flier also appeared in a campaign piece for the mayor three years ago. He says the slogan on the mailer is also on a press release for Amicone's re-election campaign. The mayor?s spokesperson says the accusations are unsubstantiated. He adds the mayor is not going to stop communicating with the residents simply because he is up for re-election. Robertson is asking the city inspector general to look into whether taxpayer money is being used for campaign purposes or not.
