Police say a Yonkers man has been charged in a brutal hate-crime beating of an Asian woman.

Police say it happened Friday evening in an apartment building in the 3rd Precinct.

The 67-year-old woman was found with severe facial injuries and was transported to a trauma center.

Police later determined she had been punched in the head and face more than 125 times and foot-stomped seven times. She also was spit on.

Police said the suspect called the woman an anti-Asian slur before the incident.

The suspect, 42-year-old Tammel Esco, was arrested outside the building and charged with attempted murder as a hate crime and assault as a hate crime.

He was arraigned in Yonkers City Court and remanded to the county jail. He is scheduled to be back in Yonkers City Court on March 25. Yonkers Police Commissioner says Esco has 14 prior arrests, including pushing a woman through a window in Yonkers last February.

The victim is recovering in the hospital after suffering broken bones in her face and internal brain bleeding.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer released the following statement: "Westchester County is known for tolerance and unity – not for hate and violence. The conduct seen in the video footage released by the Yonkers Police Department is abhorrent, and we pray for the victim and her family. Any form of hate will not be tolerated in our County, and I applaud Yonkers Police and the Westchester County District Attorney's Office for their swift action."

Gov. Kathy Hochul released the following statement:  "Everyone deserves to feel safe in our streets — discrimination, hate, & violence will never be tolerated in New York State. I’m praying that the victim makes a full recovery and have offered assistance from @nyspolice to investigate this horrific act."
