A woman was critically injured Monday when her car hit a patch of ice and skidded onto oncoming traffic in North Merrick, police say.

It happened shortly before 9 a.m. when the 59-year-old female driver was traveling westbound on Jerusalem Avenue.

One neighbor tells News 12 the sound of the crash was startling.

"I heard a very, very loud bang." the neighbor said.

Police say her vehicle skidded onto oncoming traffic in the eastbound lane near the intersection of Canton Drive, colliding with a Tesla driven by a 42-year-old man.

The woman was ejected from her vehicle following the crash.

Both drivers were transported to hospitals.

The woman is said to be listed in critical condition. The condition of the other driver is currently unknown.

"That was probably one of the worst I've ever seen...it actually sounded like there was something that was rolling too, so I think the car flipped a couple times, cause when I went out there it was on its side," said a neighbor about the sound of the crash and the damage he saw.

One man told News 12 off camera that he saw ice in the same area of the crash about three hours before it happened.

News 12 was at the scene of the crash on Jerusalem Avenue near Canton Drive and saw water bubbling up from the street Monday afternoon.

News 12 reached out to the Town of Hempstead to find out if the work being done on Jerusalem Avenue near Canton Drive has anything to do with why that patch of ice was there, but has not yet heard back.
