Peekskill police saved the life of an overdosing 28-year-old woman by using Narcan.
The rescue came less than 10 days after officers were equipped with Narcan, a drug that reverses the effects of heroin and other opiates.
The woman was found on the corner of Dyckman and Frost streets, lying unconscious and not breathing on a snow embankment. A good Samaritan called Peekskill police to alert them of the incident.
Officer Doug LaPerche says he recognized the signs of opiate overdose and gave the unconscious woman two doses of Narcan. She immediately responded and began breathing again on her own.
For those afraid to come forward, police want the public to know that they can't be charged criminally when reporting a drug overdose.
