A New Paltz man has been arrested after running over a woman with his car and driving off in Ulster County, according to state police.

The incident occurred on Thursday night around 8:30 p.m. on State Route 32 in the town of Rosendale.

Police say 37-year-old Victoria Cooper entered the roadway and was hit by a car driven by Brenda Fisher. Cooper was then in the southbound lane when she was run over by a car driven by 34-year-old Alex Brown, who drove off without stopping. Fisher stayed at the scene and called 911.

Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene. After an investigation, police arrested Brown and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in a death and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Brown was arraigned in the Ulster County Centralized Arraignment Part and was remanded to the Ulster County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in the Town of Rosendale Court on Wednesday.
