Police say a 3-year-old was found on the side of the road in Orange County Thursday.
Police received a call Thursday afternoon from an MTA worker who saw Amanda Light walking on nearby railroad tracks carrying a toddler. Moments later, a call came in from Wallkill resident who reported finding an abandoned child in a heavily wooded area by her house on Maples Road.
News 12 spoke to the family who discovered the 3-year-old in their backyard. They say it was a heartbreaking moment for everyone involved.
"My sister-in-law came and knocked on my window and said they heard a baby screaming. My brother went back there and the minute I seen him coming out from the woods with the baby in his hands, I called 911. And the little girl was responsive, like she was talking to us, she told us her name, her age. She asked us for a peanut butter sandwich, and we asked her if she wanted something to drink. She asked for cold water, and we gave her water with ice and all she kept saying is 'I want my mommy,'" says Wallkill resident Suelana Collazo.
Police found the child's mother, 29-year-old Amanda Light, about a mile away from where her daughter was found hours earlier.
The 3-year-old was evaluated by medics and was physically OK. She is in the custody of Child Protective Services.
