Police out in force as kids head back to school
Back to school season is in full swing across the Hudson Valley, which means drivers need to pay extra attention on the roadways.
According AAA, afternoons are particularly dangerous for kids walking home from school. In the last 10 years, one in four child pedestrian fatalities occurred between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Police tell News 12 they will be ticketing anyone who fails to stop for a school bus on both sides of the road. The fine for the first offense is $250 plus points on your license. They will also be watching to make sure drivers slow down in the school zones and crosswalks.
Officials are also urging parents to talk to kids about staying on the sidewalks and to remind them not to text while walking.
