One person is dead, and another critically injured following a shooting Monday morning in Newburgh, according to authorities.

Police say the shooting happened at the corner of Lander and Farrington streets around 8:40 a.m.

They say when officers arrived, they found one victim was already dead. Another victim was transported to St Luke's Hospital and is currently listed in critical condition.

Newburgh City Council Member Ramona Monteverde tells News 12 that nine shots were fired. She also says the surviving victim is currently paralyzed.

RUPCO, an affordable housing nonprofit, said the victims were two of its maintenance workers who had just started their workday when they were shot. It says Shane Lawrence died, and Richard Herring was in the hospital after undergoing surgery.

The men are both from Newburgh and had started working with the organization last October. RUPCO says their hearts go out to both men's families following the tragic incident.

A motive for the shooting has not been released yet. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact City of Newburgh Detectives at (845) 569-7509.

The Newburgh City School District is offering support to students following Monday morning's gunfire because while many kids were at school, some may have been on their school buses or waiting to be picked up.

The district wants those children to know they can share their emotions with staff.

Another incident happened on the same block last October, where another victim ended up paralyzed. He told News 12 he is still waiting for answers as well as justice in his case.
