A Yorktown mother was arrested Tuesday after police say she left her child in a car while she went shopping.
Police say they were alerted by shoppers who saw the 1-year-old child sleeping in an unlocked car in the parking lot of Toys R Us on Bank Street shortly after noon. Officers quickly searched the store for the baby's mother and found 28-year-old Sun Park.
Police say Park left the car running and the air conditioner was on, but the length of time the child was unattended was too long.
"They said the car may have stalled, and if that was the case with the 90-degree temperatures, the car would've gotten extremely hot, very hazardous, possibly fatal for the child," says Lt. Kevin Soravilla, of the Yorktown Police Department.
Wendy Quartuccio, a mother of three from Croton on Hudson, says she sympathizes with Park and admits she's left her children briefly.
"I cannot say there have not been times where I've run into a store but it's always where I can see the car, never in 90 degrees," Quartuccio says. "There have been times where I pulled up to the dry cleaners and I run in and get my dry cleaning, but other than that, it's not a good idea."
Park now faces charges of child endangerment. She is scheduled to go before a judge May 28.
