An arrest attempt turned into five hours of tense negotiations with a barricaded man who police say was armed with a knife, holding officers at bay on Tuesday.
Yonkers police attempted to serve a warrant for domestic violence for Antonio Velez Sr. early Tuesday morning on Lenox Avenue.
Police say the 44-year-old pulled out a knife and barricaded himself inside a bedroom.
White Plains Police Commissioner David Chong says negotiators work to build trust while trying to deescalate a situation.
"Sometimes these folks are so in crisis that it's very difficult to break through the shield, and we were able to break through that shield today," he said.
He says in this case, Velez Sr. complied with negotiators by throwing the knife out the window. Velez Sr. was then taken into custody.
