A quality of life crackdown in Yonkers could result in a ticket and fine for anyone who spits in public. The city plans to focus on stopping smaller crimes, like littering and spitting. Police call it the "Broken Window" theory. They say when neighborhoods deteriorate, crime is often accepted and little things like a dirty sidewalk or curb could open the door to violence. Some people in Getty Square, however, say they don't buy the theory that spitting tickets will help hold down violence.
