Police dogs and their trainers participated in drills to mimic real-life situations, and officers trained across Suffern Thursday.
A helicopter hovered above the Suffern athletic field as police dogs combed the area and nearby woods. "The helicopter is very low. It's very noisy, it's also good for the dogs," said Suffern Police Department Chief Clarke Osborne. "A lot of the dogs have not been exposed to a helicopter. They've been exposed to maybe gunfire or fires and smoke, but a lot haven't dealt with helicopters."
The dogs and their handlers also searched for narcotics and suspects.
The Suffern Police Department hosted the drill, but agencies from Orange County to New York City participated.
