A body found in a brook in Peekskill has been tentatively identified as a 38-year-old man from Guatemala.
Peekskill police were called to McGregory Brook, near Park Street, just before 11 a.m. Tuesday.
A passerby spotted the body of a man wearing a red jacket floating in the shallow water. Police cordoned off the area, and investigators could be seen putting on boots and wading into the brook.
Detectives and the medical examiner did a preliminary check to see if the man may have been a victim of foul play, but it does not appear to be the case. "We didn't see any signs of trauma on the body, so it doesn't appear to be suspicious," says Peekskill police Lt. John White.
Police are not releasing the man's name yet, but say he is in his late 30s and is known to often visit the area where he was found. "He's from Guatemala and appears to be a day laborer here in Peekskill. We're working with the consulate to make notification to the family," says Lt. White.
The medical examiner has not released a cause of death yet.
