A 16-year-old was killed and another teen was injured in a car crash in the Town of Tuxedo Saturday, state police say.
A vehicle driven by Jacob Corti, 16, of Greenwood Lake, was traveling southwest along Long Meadow Road around 5 a.m. Saturday when it left the roadway and struck a telephone pole.
The lone passenger, 16-year-old Dale Hirrel, also of Greenwood Lake, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Corti was flown to Westchester Medical Center with injuries to his legs. There is no word on his condition at this time.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Grief counseling was offered Sunday at the Greenwood Lake Elementary school for all students in the district.
"The kids have been through a lot," says Tuxedo School District Superintendent Nancy Teed. "They're making it through being together, talking to the grief counselors and the psychologist and the faculty."
The community also held a candlelight vigil to pray and share stories about Hirrel, who is described as well-loved.
"He was a kind caring kid. He loved his family," says neighbor Ken Dawson. "He helped everybody, all his friends, anytime they needed him. He was there."
A fundraiser was set up on YouCaring.com to help the Hirrel family pay for funeral costs.
