A plan to create a home for adults with special needs in Mount Pleasant is dividing the community.

The nonprofit organization YAI is seeking to turn a single-family home on Halsey Place into a group home for six developmentally disabled adults. The home has currently has five bedrooms, but another would be added.

YAI presented its plans to the Mount Pleasant Town Board Thursday night.

The home would be for six women from Westchester with developmental disabilities. It would have routine maintenance and 24-hour staff who have gone through criminal background checks and have extensive training to provide support and programs for the residents.

Neighbors say they are concerned about noise, traffic congestion and property values.

Others were welcoming of the group home.

YAI already has a home in Pleasantville whose residents have been there for more than a decade.

The town board is yet to take a position. The decision on whether the group home can move forward ultimately lies with the state.
