Police say a Pine Bush man remains in serious condition after crashing his pickup truck overnight into a Dunkin' in Orange County.
Authorities say Eric Schrader, 44, veered off Route 52 in Pine Bush shortly before 1 a.m. and drove his Chevy Silverado pickup truck into the store. The incident severely damaged the building and trapped Schrader in his vehicle for two hours, according to police.
People in the area say they hope the driver recovers, and that the incident could have been much worse if the store was open.
“Luckily, no one was working,” says Pine Bush resident Grant Gerow.
The Crawford Building Department has deemed the building unsafe, and officials say it will be demolished. Rescue crews shared photos of the badly damaged building on Facebook, and said they remained on scene for three hours to remove the trapped driver from inside his vehicle and shore up the building. As of Thursday afternoon, the pickup truck remained inside the store.
“They’re afraid it’s going to collapse on top of the truck if they try to pull it out,” said one resident who stopped by to see the damage and asked not to be identified.
Police say Schrader suffered multiple injuries, including a serious head injury and remains hospitalized. They haven’t said what caused him to crash.
Repair crews said the store will be demolished on Friday.
“Hopefully, they rebuild,” says Peter Trotter, from Pine Bush. “People like Dunkin' Donuts.”
