(06/02/06) HAMPTONBURGH ? A single-engine plane crashed in Hamptonburgh Friday during its approach to Orange County Airport, killing the pilot.
The pilot was identified as Thomas Dayon of West Milford, New Jersey. Police say he was pronounced dead at the scene. The plane left Greenwood, New Jersey and went down about 3 miles from the airport. Police say Dayon was planning to pick up a passenger in Orange County.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says Dayon told controllers he was going to switch to Orange County frequency on his radio, but never did. The FAA did receive a low-altitude alarm from an aircraft in the area.
