Piermont is getting set to ban single-use plastic bags and Styrofoam at the beginning of next year.
The measure serves as an effort to keep streets and the river community's shoreline clean.
Mayor Bruce Tucker says plastic bags are the number one item  pulled out of the river by Piermont shores. He says they are encouraging people to walk around with reusable bags.
Plastic bags and Styrofoam containers won't be banned in the village until Jan. 1, but some businesses are already getting a head start.
Maureen Hovorka opened her family-owned business on Main Street last month and says she went plastic-free before they even opened.
Her store is fully stocked with plant-based material products like biodegradable grocery bags and utensils.
"We are trying to do the best we can on our end of it and hopefully we can continue and everyone will catch on and do the same," Hovorka says.
Hovorka also hopes that the rest of Rockland County will eventually get rid of plastic and Styrofoam.
