A petition by Yonkers residents to reverse a move to extend Yonkers City Council term limits was retracted shortly after it was submitted.

Over 3,200 signatures were gathered in Yonkers opposing the recently passed legislation that allows elected officials to run for a third term. The council voted 5-2 in favor of the measure.

But some Yonkers residents were rankled, and set up a petition against it.

Council President Mike Khader, who would benefit from the measure, didn't hold back in conveying his disapproval of the process.

"The topic is worth consideration but the process that occurred I oppose, and that's why I voted no for any extension of term. It should be left up for the people," says Khader.

The petition was 180 signatures short. Some residents say they will work to make their voices heard.

News 12 Westchester reached out to Mayor Mike Spano for comment and is awaiting a response.
