Richard Doyle, 56, of Mahopac, says he's shutting down his store after new charges emerged from his former pet store in Connecticut. According to the Danbury New Times, Doyle has been charged with "maliciously caused wounds" to a St. Bernard puppy according to an arrest warrant, and has been charged with animal cruelty and practicing veterinary medicine without a license. This is Doyle's third arrest since July of last year.
According to the New York State Department of Agriculture, Doyle owned the American Breeders stores at 1767 East Main St. in Mohegan Lake, 1582 Route 9 in Wappingers Falls and at 128 Federal Road in Danbury.
The charges against Doyle and other "puppy mills" has prompted state Sen. Terrance Murphy to push for new legislation to stiffen penalties for animal abusers. "New York needs to set a strong example that animal abuse, especially by individuals who are charged with caring for them, cannot and will not be tolerated," says Murphy.
