Flags were flown at half staff in Pelham in remembrance of an officer who died in a car crash Wednesday.
Officials said 34-year-old officer Shamus Sliney lost control of his car, swerved and dropped about 100 feet into a ravine around 4:30 p.m. They said it happened on the southbound side of Route 9 near Cortlandt while Sliney was off duty. Officials said excessive speed was to blame for the crash.
Friends and family said Sliney, whose father served more than 20 years on the force, will be missed.
"He got along with everybody and worked very well with the community," Pelham Police Chief Joseph Benefico said.
Sliney was with the Pelham Police Department for 11 years. He also spent two years with the Mount Vernon Police Department. He leaves behind a wife and a daughter.
The department said a memorial service will be held Monday.
