Peekskill HS students stage walkout in support of football coach who resigned
Students at Peekskill High School staged a walkout Thursday in protest following the resignation of the school's football coach.
Over 100 students left the building at 12 p.m. and marched to the football field in support of coach Malcolm Wright.
They say coach Wright was wrongfully accused of hitting a student.
Wright was named head coach in June 2021 after being an assistant coach in Harrison. He is also a physical education teacher at the school.
Superintendent Dr. David Mauricio said in a statement to News 12: "The Board of Education and District leadership acknowledge the students' emotions and that they want their voices to be heard. We want them to know that we hear them, and that we understand, but legally, we cannot speak about personnel matters."
Thursday night's special school board meeting agenda shows Wright's resignation is up for approval, stating his last day was Tuesday.
