Peekskill unveiled a life-size state of President Abraham Lincoln Saturday to commemorate a historic stop in Westchester.
Standing at almost 7 feet tall, the bronze statue is located almost exactly in the same spot where Lincoln spoke to 2,000 people in Peekskill in 1861 on his way to Washington, D.C. for his inauguration.
The statue's creator Richard Masloski says he set out to make the sculpture historically significant. ?His coat-tails are indicative of the coming winds of war and the classic hand close to the heart shows he will hold onto the union,? said Masloski.
In addition to the statue, a railroad building will be turned into the Lincoln Depot Museum within the next couple of years as part of the revitalization of area. Former Governor George Pataki, who grew up in Peekskill, was at the unveiling and he says he is happy to see that efforts are being made to restore the Lincoln Depot.
