What started as a longstanding, playful political tradition has turned into a nightmare for a Peekskill bakery.
For years, Homestyle Desserts in Peekskill has screen-printed the faces of the two presidential candidates on cookies to sell. These presidential cookies date back to the Clinton administration.
Beyond politics, the bakery has made cookies for Super Bowl teams and celebrities.
The business said it never faced any backlash until now - a sign of the times.
Since unveiling the cookies last week, bakery co-owner Laura Timmons said the business received threats both online and over the phone.
She said while their families, employees and friends all hold different beliefs, they will not allow people to spread hate.
"This is America," Timmons said. "It's freedom of speech. We're not favoring any candidate. We're just doing what we always do and that's just wrong."
She said the bakery makes an equal number of each screen-printed cookie with a photograph of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris.
In a turn of events, loyal customers are flocking to the business to show their support regardless of political party.
Since she went public with the harassment the business has faced, Timmons said the bakery has received an influx in people ordering the cookies.
Timmons said her business will remain politically neutral because she understands they serve a diverse community with varying opinions.
Despite these threats, Timmons said the business will not stop printing the cookies through Election Day.
