Pearl River middle schoolers build garden for outdoor learning

Hundreds of Pearl River middle schoolers got outside of the classroom on Tuesday to build a garden.
The fifth, sixth, and seventh graders each spent parts of their school day putting together the 25 x 25 garden area, with help from teachers, staff, administrators and other adult volunteers.
The idea to build one grew from sixth grader Fiona when she asked her science teacher, Brittany Martinez, about it and now it's a reality.
"I love how everyone in the whole school has a chance to see it and has a chance to do stuff in it," said Fiona.
Martinez reached out to the Home Depot, which covered everything for the project, the plants, the materials, a shed and tools that will go inside of it.
There will also be a composter, a rain harvest system and an outdoor classroom set up.
Martinez estimates the project cost about $7,000m which the big-name box store paid for.
She hopes it will serve as a great learning space for every student, not just the ones in science class.
"I just think it's really cool to see something from start to finish and be part of a process of growing, getting their hands dirty, learning outside," said Martinez.
News 12 is told there's hopes for whatever grows there to possibly be served to kids or go to a food pantry inside one of the districts elementary schools.
Most students signed their names on patio bricks that will go into the garden.
