Artuso Pastry Factory in Mount Vernon will have to be torn down following a major fire.
The family who has owned the popular business on South 12th Avenue for generations says the fire won't put an end to their cannoli manufacturing. The plant manufactured cannoli shells that were sold to wholesale distributors.
The pastry shells are also used at Artuso Pastry & Café in Mamaroneck and the family's Bronx store. Owners say enough shells were stored outside of Mount Vernon to keep retail outlets stocked.
A new manufacturing location for roughly 40 employees must now be found. Other manufacturers, including competitors, have offered space in the meantime to keep the wholesale business up and running.
There is no word yet on when exactly the building will be torn down.
