A Tuckahoe parish is praying for a miracle to stay open after the New York Archdiocese put its realignment plan into action.
The archdiocese announced Friday that several churches will close, while others will expand. However, the nearly century-old Church of Assumption in Tuckahoe was placed under review. Mayor Mike Martino (R-Tuckahoe) says the church plays an important role in the community and needs to remain independent, rather than merge with another parish.
Meanwhile, members of Yonkers' Our Lady of the Rosary say they are still in shock after learning their church will permanently shut its doors. Parishioners say their letters and pleas that they could financially support the church fell on deaf ears. Cardinal Edward Egan says the realignment is about meeting the needs of the shifting Catholic population, not financial hardship.
