Some parents and students are upset that a bill to appoint a state monitor over the Hasidic-run East Ramapo school board failed to pass in Albany.

Students say the board let the school deteriorate to the point where they've had to deal with mold, leaky ceilings and even a roof collapse. There was also a string of program cuts.

Orthodox Jewish leaders tell News 12 that the problem really revolves around state funding.

"The state is underfunded," says Yossi Gestetner, of Orthodox Public Jewish Affairs. "And the district says there are issues and we need to change, but it's difficult to make change without funding."



State lawmakers are now off for the summer, so the earliest that debate could get underway on a new version of the oversight bill is late fall.
