Parents are calling for a crossing guard to be added near Hewitt Elementary School in Rockville Centre.
The district says a student was nearly hit by a car while crossing Hempstead Avenue during dismissal. The superintendent says police have been patrolling the area since that incident.
One parent told the board that is the same area his child was hit by a car 23 years ago.
“Nothing was worse than getting that phone call and being driven by the police call and being driven by the police to Nassau University Medical Center,” said Jeffrey Greenfield, of Rockville Centre. “It’s something no parent should ever experience.”
The superintendent tells News 12 that he is actively pushing for a traffic study
He says the village and police department are also on board.
