The Town of New Canaan’s Office of Emergency Management says CT Route 106 (Old Stamford Road) will remain closed between Weed Street and Lapham Road all day today due to road damage from Tuesday’s water main break. Weed Street and Lapham Road are being used as detours, and officials say they will share updates as they come from the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

Aquarion Water Company reports the water main near Old Stamford Road was repaired early Wednesday morning, but the roadway must stay closed while crews address the remaining damage. The break affected a heavily traveled area near the Merritt Parkway ramps and the Talmadge Hill train station, where residents expect significant delays throughout the morning commute.

“This intersection gets really busy in the morning,” said New Canaan resident Terry Dinan. “With Old Stamford Road closed, it definitely impacts Weed Street. I’ll be finding another way to get to the Merritt.”

Aquarion says some customers may briefly see discolored water. If that happens, the company recommends running a cold-water faucet until the water clears and waiting to do laundry until it returns to normal.

“It just means a lot of rerouting and a lot of traffic on other roads,” said resident Tony Du. “It’s going to be a pain in the morning.”

Emergency Management Director Russ Kimes urged residents to stay safe as crews continue repairs and the town monitors updates from state transportation officials.
