Ossining's police chief is reflecting on the past year of protests and police reform on the one-year anniversary of George Floyd's death.

Chief Kevin Sylvester was one of the first law enforcement leaders in the Hudson Valley to take a stand following George Floyd's death.

He attended Black Lives Matter protests and has instituted changes to his department's excessive force policy.

Sylvester says one aspect of improving community policing is focusing on communication with residents.

"I think that what goes on in policing is one aspect of things, but helping people to understand the why behind that is really sometimes the more important piece of the puzzle," says Sylvester.

Sylvester says he is also working to improve diversity in his department, which serves a community where nearly half of the population is Latino. His department also launched a Spanish-only Facebook page in January to meet the needs of the Latino community
