An Irish group in Yonkers, made up of mostly veterans, raised money so homeless veterans who have passed away can get a proper burial.
Members of the Narrowback Organization gathered Thursday at the Heritage Restaurant to raise funds for their fellow service members who have passed away.
The fraternal group has been together for about eight years, and estimates it has arranged funerals for over 70 homeless veterans in the past three years.
The group's leaders say their mission is to see that all the homeless veterans are never forgotten and honored for their service and sacrifice to their country. "It's easy to bury somebody, but it's hard to remember what they looked like if you never met them. And that's our objective, that these fellows will have a decent burial," says Jim Mullarkey, of the Narrowback Organization.
Members of the group are also trying to raise awareness to get a deceased Vietnam veteran named Tommy Minogue, who was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, upgraded to Medal of Honor.
Minogue died in Vietnam when he was 20 years old. He saved members of his unit and a commander when they came under enemy fire.
Even if the upgrade never comes, Minogue's brother, Jack,  is grateful for the recognition Tommy is now getting.
"Everyone knew that he got killed, but nobody knew the circumstances," Jack says. "Now entire families, younger members know about it."
