Some fireworks are now legal in certain parts of New York state.
Aerial firecrackers like Roman candles and bottle rockets remain banned, but the century-old prohibition of many others is no longer in effect in Orange and Putnam counties.
Those counties expect millions in taxable revenue as a result. All fireworks remain illegal in Westchester and Rockland counties.
Ground-based fireworks can still be beautiful, says Camille Esposito of July Fourth Forever Fireworks in Newburgh.
Firework sales end in the state on Sunday but resume at the end of the year during the week of Dec. 26.
