An Orange County woman is out of the hospital this afternoon after being treated for knife wounds inflicted by her estranged husband.
Police say the woman was attacked at around 9 p.m. on Saturday by former New York State Police Capt. Tom Phelan at their home on 26 Starhaven Ave. in Middletown.Investigators say Phelan slashed at her neck and later killed himself. Police say they found the woman with a superficial cut and was taken to the Orange Regional Medical Center.
A friend of the family tells News 12 that the Phelans were going through a separation, and that Phelan had retired from the state police because of a stroke that he had suffered a few years ago. The family friend says Phelan had become emotionally disturbed because of medical problems and was being treated for depression. Neighbors say that Phelan had previously tried to commit suicide.
The couple has two children, a 19-year-old daughter who was visiting from college, and a 24-year-old son who lives out of town. Neither child was home at the time of the attack.
