One of six proposed casinos in Orange County got a major endorsement Thursday.
Backed by Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus, the Grand Hudson Resort and Casino took center stage in New Windsor as developers and supporters announced plans to build an indoor, Olympic-style sports complex in addition to the casino.
The casino would be built at Stewart Airport, but the sports complex would be put on undeveloped land as an addition to an already existing park.
Casino developers agreed to build the multimillion-dollar complex right off of Route 94 if gaming plans are approved.
The project is one of six vying for state licensing, and appears to have won over even staunch casino critics, including the Hasidic village of Kiryas Joel.
Some people against the casino say that no matter where the location, a casino will bring in crime, traffic and other unwanted dealings to the Hudson Valley.
The state plans to approve four casino sites in New York by the end of this month.
