Westchester County's Operation Backpack is underway with the help of Sharing Shelf in Port Chester, a community partner for the program.
About 40 volunteers have already stuffed 200 backpacks with supplies for high school students in need. Much of the supplies was bought with financial donations from the community.
Collection bins have also been set up at several government offices and businesses throughout the county. Organizers say a $25 donation will help fill one backpack and start a child's school year off on the right foot.
New, empty backpacks and scientific calculators are still needed. The deadline for donations is Sept. 5.
