Dr. Mehmet Oz, the new head of Medicare, sat down with News 12 senior reporter Tara Rosenblum to share some tips on how to save more during Open Enrollment.
Medicare Open Enrollment is underway through Dec. 7. The stakes are higher than usual this year.
Premiums are rising and some plans are disappearing. Dr. Oz says it's more important than ever to shop carefully.
"This is an opportunity for you to take advantage of, perhaps, our greatest social safety net program of them all," he says.
Dr. Oz advises people to review their plan and check
Medicare.gov because there are savings to be had.
"We have a website that's improved dramatically. In fact, Medicare Advantage itself is going to drop its price a little bit this year, so you might be able to save yourself a lot of money," he says.
This coming year, some big insurers are pulling back or leaving certain markets altogether, which is leaving many seniors worried about losing their favorite plans or paying more out of pocket.
"In most parts of the country, even if one plan drops out, you have plenty of others to choose from. And part of our negotiation is to make sure you get the most value for your money. Pick one of the other plans that are there," Dr. Oz suggests.
Another major concern this year is scams. The Better Business Bureau says fake Medicare calls are surging as con artists try to trick seniors into giving up personal information.
Dr. Oz warns cold calls are a dead giveaway of fraud.
"They try to get your Medicare beneficiary number, that's your key identifying number that's on your Medicare card. They can use that number to defraud the system. So, please don't share that number with anybody," Dr. Oz says.
Open enrollment runs through Dec. 7. Dr. Oz says the biggest mistake you can make this year is doing nothing at all.
