Word of Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence's arrest kept Ramapo officials tight-lipped and behind closed doors Thursday.
St. Lawrence is accused of mishandling public money and lying to lure investors into funding Provident Bank Park.
St. Lawrence adamantly denied the allegations and longtime rumors to News 12 in an interview days before his arrest.
The federal government has charged St. Lawrence and Aaron Troodler, the former executive director of the Local Development Corporation tied to the park, with 22 counts of fraud and conspiracy.
The probe began in 2013 when then-town employee Melissa Reimer blew the whistle on the alleged corruption. Two other town employees, Deputy Finance Director Nathan Oberman and attorney Michael Klein, are now also facing civil charges for allegedly covering up debt and illegally transferring money between town accounts.
Klein declined to comment, but spoke to News 12 Tuesday about allegations of wrongdoing facing another town employee.
"We're dealing in a realm of politics I'd much rather not get involved in. I'm much more concerned with making sure those people who work for the town do their jobs and do them well," he said.
While St Lawrence and Troodler face prison time, the feds say that taxpayers will be paying for all of this as well. As of August, the town has $128 million in outstanding bonds.
