Authorities say a man is dead after a fire erupted at his Central Nyack home on Saturday afternoon.
Officials say the man's neighbors called at about 4:48 p.m. about a porch fire at 49 Laurel Road. When emergency services arrived on the scene, the fire was raging inside the house and on the porch.
Firefighters rescued the man from the second floor. They tried to revive him, but ultimately could not save him.
A neighbor told News 12 that her mother saw the man desperately throwing cups of water at the fire in an effort to it out. She said her mother rushed outside to help the man, but he went back inside. She said the next time her mother saw the man was when first responders were trying to revive him.
Those neighbors also said he was an older man who lived with his wife in the home for many years.
It took eight different fire departments to get the fire under control.
Clarkstown police were still on the scene as of Saturday night.
It was a very long and hard day for the Clarkstown Police Department following an apparent murder suicide that also happened Saturday in New City. Because of the two situations, mental health resources will be made available to the officers as well.
