Officials say an officer at Green Haven Correctional Facility was struck and injured by a 25-pound dumbbell thrown by an inmate.
They say the inmate was carrying the dumbbell from a yard when he threw it at the officer as he was entering a housing unit at the maximum-security correctional facility on the morning of April 8.
Authorities say that the officer blocked the dumbbell, a response unit was called, and that the inmate immediately ran and sat down at one of the tables in the housing unit.
When the response team arrived at the unit, the inmate was handcuffed and taken to a facility medical clinic for evaluation.
Authorities say upon entering the unit, the inmate continued to be combative, kicking the escort officers.
The officer who was injured by the dumbbell was treated by medical staff at the facility and transported to Vassar Brothers Medical Center for pain, swelling and discomfort to his left hand and finger.  He did not return to duty.
