A one-story home on Laurie Lane in Monsey is half charred, half untouched, following a quick response by first responders to a fire at the home on New Year's Eve.

Police said the fire was brought under control quickly, though neighbors said that for a short time it lit up the neighborhood.

Detectives with Ramapo Police told News 12 Monday morning they are investigating the possibility the fire may have been caused by spent fireworks disposed of in a trash can near the home. The fire spread from the trash can to an SUV in the driveway and to the right side of the home up to the roof.

Despite the fiery scene, police said the damage was contained to one side of the home and that the home is not a total loss.

Police report no injuries to the family who lives at the home, nor to any first responders, though the family is temporarily displaced.

The fire is not being considered suspicious, police said, and their investigation is ongoing.
