Police have arrested three men they believe beat an off-duty NYPD officer before he was critically injured when he was shot by a fellow officer Saturday.
Investigators say Officer Eric Hernandez, of White Plains, was on line at a White Castle in the Bronx when a group of men taunted him and then began brutally beating him. Hernandez eventually made his way to the parking lot where he drew his weapon and pointed it at a man he thought was one of his attackers. Police have released a surveillance video that shows the beating, which they believe left Hernandez dazed and unable to identify himself as an officer when police arrived.
According to witness, when police told Hernandez to drop his weapon he turned towards them with his gun in hand. That's when one of the officers fired, hitting Hernandez three times. Hernandez has undergone several surgeries and remains in very serious condition at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx. Family and friends are hoping for the best.
