An NYPD officer is suffering injuries after making a traffic stop in the Bronx, police say.
Police say the suspect pulled a gun on the officer and then dragged the officer with his van at a traffic stop in the Belmont section of the Bronx at around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning,
The NYPD is still searching for the male suspect, who left the gray van near the corner of East 179th Street and Arthur Avenue and fled toward East Tremont Avenue. They say the suspect is possibly in his 40s. He was wearing black pants, multicolored sneakers and a gray shirt.
The engine of the car was running for hours according to police, suggesting the suspect may have quickly fled the scene on foot.
The roads remained blocked as police searched for the suspect.
One local resident says she's not surprised to hear of something like this in her neighborhood.
"I never feel safe after dark or toward evening walking this way," said Denise Erica Tyler. "I walk around to avoid going through this pocket... A bigger police presence always deters crime, criminal activity, or just loitering."
Authorities say the officer is in stable condition at St. Barnabas Hospital with minor back injuries.
