Police say the officer is in critical condition at Brookdale University Hospital
Authorities say it started at 7 p.m. when the off-duty officer went with a relative to meet the seller at a location on Ruby Street. They say when he arrived, the seller pulled out a gun and the sale turned into a robbery.
The officer was shot in the head and the suspect fled in a car.
Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell visited the officer in the hospital and said they will stop at nothing to find the person responsible.
New York City Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch was also at the hospital and urged lawmakers to provide help to protect police.
