NYPD Highway Unit honors Detective Anastasios Tsakos one year after he was killed in the line of duty
NYPD officers honored the late Detective Anastasios Tsakos Wednesday one year after he was struck and killed while in the line of duty by a drunk driver.
Members of the NYPD Highway Patrol held a candle lighting and moment of silence in his honor, writing on Twitter that he will be forever in their hearts.
Tsakos was directing traffic away from a deadly crash on the Long Island Expressway in Queens on April 27 last year when investigators say Jessica Beauvais, of Hempstead, was driving drunk with a suspended license and struck him.
Former NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea posthumously promoted Tsakos to detective first grade at his funeral in Greenlawn.
Beauvais was denied bail in a hearing last year. Her next appearance at the Queens Supreme Court is on May 12.
