The NYPD commissioner apologized Thursday to former professional tennis player James Blake after he was tackled and handcuffed by officers.
Blake says as many as five officers took him down while he was waiting for a car to drive him to the U.S. Open on Wednesday. Police say Blake, a Yonkers native, was misidentified as a suspect in a credit card fraud case.
Commissioner Bill Bratton says he saw surveillance video of the incident and was concerned about the "inappropriate amount of force" that was used.
"I would be very interested, as well as the mayor, to talk with him, to extend my apologies for the incident which he found himself involved in yesterday," says Bratton.
The department's Internal Affairs Unit is looking into what happened. One officer has already been placed on desk duty in connection to the incident.
