The NYPD announced on Friday that an 11-month-old girl who was found unresponsive in a Longwood apartment is now being deemed a homicide.
The medical examiner told News 12 that the girl died from drowning.
Police said no arrests had been made as of Friday evening, but police are questioning the child’s mother.
"She had two other daughters, and she was always with those little girls,” said one neighbor, who declined to give her name. “She was always with her family, always, always."
The NYPD said 11-month-old Jazeli Mirabal was found unresponsive inside a fifth-floor apartment on West Farms Road on Aug. 14.
Investigators added that the baby was found in a bathtub and the child’s mother was home at the time.
News 12 was told that the infant was taken to Lincoln Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Neighbors who spoke on Friday said they are still in shock.
“Hearing that news is so horrible,” said Lisa Suazo, of Longwood. “You have to be careful what you’re doing with your children. You have to care for them.”
“It’s a sad situation, but at least she’s resting now,” said another neighbor who declined to be identified.
ACS said it is working with the NYPD and the Medical Examiner's Office for the investigation.
