New York Senate Majority Leader Andrew Stewart-Cousins is calling on the federal government as the state faces a possible $13 billion deficit because of the coronavirus pandemic.
She says the state may be forced to cut their budget if they don't get the necessary funds. Stewart-Cousins also says that despite thousands handling phones, 400,000 people are still trying to get unemployment insurance.
The Department of Labor said Monday that New York is still waiting for a $4 billion federal loan to come through because the state alone cannot afford to pay the 1 million people who are unemployed long-term.
Some people say President Donald Trump insinuated on Tuesday that federal aid would be dependent on states putting a stop to sanctuary cities.
Stewart-Cousins says her top priorities going forward include helping more people get tested and salvaging the budget so New York can get closer to normalcy.
